Night of a Thousand Stars

Despite the weather throughout the day and the rest of the country, the night was clear and the stars shining during the bonfire night celebrations during which there was a magnificent array of fireworks. With hot dogs, toffee apples, treacle toffee and soup to hand, everyone had a great evening. The bonfire was moved to higher ground, and we were in desperate need of an arsonist to get the damp wood alight, but it was done!

Sunday’s racing was in dry, but very blustery conditions. William and Lesley caught a gust coming in to a gybe mark, but trying to stay to windward of the mark during the gust was not the right thing to do, and they ended up capsized on the mark. Having righted the boat and u lassooing themselves from the mark they continued the race. But while they were over, all but Jim Christie capsized as well. Jose thought Ginge was running off with the other woman when he fell out of the back of the boat, but managed to hold on to the mainsheet and rescue the boat (and Jose, of course) from who knows what?! Jim’s caution kept him upright, and he won the race on personal handicap, only to have his handicap chopped by 5% for subsequent races.

The afternoon race had more gybe marks and even bigger squalls. William and Lesley picked up a gust coming in to the first gybe mark, and went for another swim, but managed to right the boat and continued the race again. Jim maintained his caution, and avoided flying his spinnaker, but also had problems with a broken toestrap, and a universal tiller joint that may not have survived another lap. He again won on the water, but his amended handicap led to Ginge winning the race, and becoming series leader.

Remember there’s only three weeks left. If you don’t intend sailing you would be well advised to make sure your boat is away from the high water level as the lake is presently very high, and several trailers along the lower slip are already in water.
